AAAG Facilitates Training for Somalia’s Public Finance Officers on Best Practices in Public Sector Accounting and Financial Management

Recently, the African Association of Accountants General (AAAG) conducted a two-day workshop on Best Practices in Public Sector Accounting and Financial Management for government officials from the Federal Government of Somalia. Held in Mogadishu from February 22nd to 23rd, 2025, the training aimed to enhance the financial management skills of public finance professionals, covering crucial areas such as internal controls, risk mitigation, budgeting, expenditure control, and revenue recognition.

This initiative was made possible through the leadership and facilitation of Somalia’s Accountant General, Mr. Abdirahman Anas, whose dedication to strengthening Somalia’s financial governance played a key role in making this engagement a success.

Commitment to Learning and Excellence

The training brought together 50 government accountants, all of whom demonstrated a strong commitment to learning and applying best financial management practices. Through interactive discussions, case studies, and experience-sharing sessions, participants deepened their understanding of public sector financial management principles.

During the event, AAAG Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Fredrick Riaga, emphasized the importance of adopting global best practices to enhance transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline in public sector finance. The program covered key areas, including:

  • Strong Internal Controls to prevent fraud and financial mismanagement.
  • Risk Management Strategies to mitigate operational and compliance risks.
